Historical Black College and University Tour

Applications are no longer being accepted for the 2020 Sylvester Pace Historical Black College Tour.

Since its inception over 2,600 high school juniors from the Pittsburgh area have visited 14 HBCU’s annually, including Tennessee State, Fisk, Tuskegee, Norfolk State, Hampton, Virginia State, Howard, Spelman, Morehouse, Claflin and South Carolina State. Approximately 44% of the students who go on the tour actually enroll at a HBCU. During the tour the students visited several historical landmarks including the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church (site of the 1963 bombing that killed 4 young girls), George Washington Carver Museum and the Martin Luther King Visitor’s Center and the Black Wax Museum.

In order to qualify for the tour, each student must submit the following:

  • High school transcript (minimum 2.5 GPA).
  • 300-word typed essay about your aspirations beyond high school.
  • A $50 application fee via money order made payable to Iota Phi Foundation.
  • Letter of recommendation from your teacher, counselor or community leader.
  • In addition, each student must be available for a professional interview.

Past Tour Highlights

The 22nd annual Sylvester Pace Historical Black College Tour was a huge success. Ninety-six (96) high school students participated in this educational and cultural experience. We give a huge thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, partners and especially to our chaperones.

We look forward to working with this year's applicants and  helping to expose them to opportunities that can make their (and our) futures bright.
